West of Lunch is the moniker I chose for my Instagram account some years ago, and so I’m using it as the name of this website, it just seems easiest. The website is an opportunity to offer for sale the watercolours as a means of subsidising the purchase of more paper, paint and brushes, as well as being a kind of bulletin board for posting sketches and works in progress. Actually, besides the shop, I’m not yet sure how the website will be used.

I have some art college in my background but it was only about ten years ago I took a watercolour class. Its lightness was very appealing and painters I’ve loved, like Raoul Dufy, make it look so fine, so breezy, so easy. It turns out watercolour is not nearly as simple as it looks and small variations in paper, liquidity, humidity, brush size, etc etc affect how things turn out. But it has completely seduced and intrigued me and so I continue it as a practise, particularly when travelling.
I post fairly regularly to Instagram @westoflunch, and the feed includes almost everything here on the website as well as lots of sketches, unfinished pieces, pieces that I end up not being happy with, travel sketches, rainy day fiddlings, etc.
This website shop is only for those pieces I’d feel comfortable seeing on someone else’s wall with my name on it.
I’d be delighted if any of the pieces appeal to you.
